Longer charging and shorter flight time spoils the Typhoon H Pro

While the Typhoon H Pro is the premium offering from Yuneec, DJI sits firmly at the top with a much higher market share and loyal fan-base. DJI, faced with the Yuneec attempt to challenge it, has simply stepped up its R&D and offerings. And from the average consumer point of view, it is clearly superior in the market.

The latest consumer drone in the Yuneec arsenal of RC quadcopter and hexacopter drones is the Typhoon H Pro. While the specs and six propellers of the Typhoon H Pro look nice, three obvious and serious issues have been identified by experts, keeping the DJI Phantom series ahead—the battery performance, ease of control, and size.

DJI Phantom 4 and Typhoon H Pro are both equipped with excellent video cameras and are similarly priced, and both have autonomous and safety features that make flying easy. However, Phantom 4 is significantly ahead of the it with two distinct and patented features—TapFly and ActiveTrack. These make it possible even for inexperienced pilots to fly the drone and do it safely and smoothly.

A major drawback of the Typhoon H Pro is its battery recharge time—a full charge takes well over two hours. That is twice as long as the time it takes the Phantom 4 to fuel up. Typhoon H Pro flight time can be shorter. Almost any DJI Phantom 4 review suggests flight time of close to 28 minutes. On the other hand, despite Yuneec claims of 24 minutes, live tests average only about 22 minutes for the Pro With a two-hour recharge time, Typhoon H Pro pilots will definitely need to keep a few extra batteries on hand.

Although the Typhoon H Pro hexacopter design is meant to add stability in flight, it has also made the drone a very heavy and bulky drone. With its remote control unit stacked with a multitude of buttons and switches, the Yuneec drone can be difficult to control.

The Typhoon H Pro is a hexacopter—its design is supposed to offer an added degree of stability in flight. In addition to making the drone heavier and harder to carry, the extra weight has also led to a shorter flight time, compared to DJI Phantom 4.

The Typhoon H Pro is one of the many modern drones with a 4K camera. While the Typhoon H Pro camera is likely to get some acceptable reviews, some experts have already pointed out the washed-out colors and the blurry frames. In addition, its video downlink relies entirely on the internal wifi card, lagging behind DJI, which offers its revolutionary Lightbridge 2 streaming feature.

The remote control unit has a display that is only basic in resolution. And the crowd of buttons and switches only adds confusion for the users.

How to reinvigorate your aerial photography with re-composition skills?

Beginners or veterans, one thing that’s been known to all is that a good composition adds many points to a photo.

But composition is not an easy thing in aerial photography. Different from traditional photography, where photographers can adjust camera positions however and whenever they want to, doing the same thing in aerial photography needs to fly a drone back and forth, with a high cost since the battery of a drone is limited.

That’s why even an experienced photographer cannot ensure every photo is perfect when shooting down from the air.

He might shoot other things that he doesn’t wish to include in the photo:

Or forget to keep the gimbal leveled:

If you unluckily come across the above problems of aerial shooting, try re-composition before giving up.

But what if you don’t know a thing about the rule of third or golden section or the Fibonacci spiral?

Original image, shot in Guilin, China with DJI Phantom 4. The lights are good, plus the hills exclusively found in Guilin, this photo does have something to say. But overall, it’s too plain, with those hills and the sky taking a half of the picture, making it confusing because there is no highlight. Let alone the shape of a drone propeller is also included in the photo.

How to make this photo a bit professional and special? There should be a highlight, a focus, and it has to be the hills.

So use a triangle composition mode and click Crop to reduce the size. And then make this photo black and white. With the lights and hills fill over the photo, it looks like a gorgeous Chinese painting.

Example 2

Original image, shot in Hokkaido, Japan with DJI Phantom 4. This is a shot when I was shooting 720p panorama. When I looked back to this photo, I found the shape of the grove very interesting, however, not emphasized enough. I was to underline the grove, but the fields steal its thunder. It’s also ruined by the strange field in the lower right.

I think square composition is more suitable here, so I adjust the images to 1:1, and put the grove at the cross of two diagonals.

However, cropping images always costs a reduction of resolution. So the fundamental thing is to do the right composition at the first place.

So two more tips for shooting:

  • Hide all unnecessary interfaces on the screen

Shooting with the edges being obscured by other interfaces is nothing good for composition. You might shoot something you don’t want without knowing it.

So hide all unnecessary interfaces and shoot with the camera footage at full screen.

What sets DJI Phantom 4 and Yuneec Typhoon H apart?

With all of the core specifications being similar such as flight time, 4K camera, obstacle avoidance,what sets DJI Phantom 4 and Yuneec Typhoon H apart?

Currently the Phantom 4 wins because of its lower price (when you include the realsense module on the Yuneec Typhoon H). Although the obstacle avoidance system is not perfect (especially with small objects like smaller tree branches), the fact that it also allows for visual object tracking makes it easier to record professional looking videos with ease by keeping your subject in shot as you fly around (most of the time). However if you prefer to film yourself doing stuff from the drone, then the Yuneec Typhoon H follow me functionality is better when using the wizard wand as it still relies on GPS to track you.

The key feature of these two flagship drones of 2016 is the fact that they include object avoidance / anti collision technology. This is a game changer as it takes the safety factor of flying your drone to the next level. This means that when you are flying and your drone detects that it is approaching an obstacle in front of it like a person, tree, or a building, the autopilot will take over and stop your quadcopter, preventing a crash.

Both the Phantom 4 and Yuneec Typhoon H have the ability for obstacle avoidance to prevent you crashing. Assuming you upgrade to the realsense module on your Typhoon H, the performance should be similar as I don’t think the basic ultrasonic sensor will be very useful for smaller obstacles like poles. So what sets the two apart?

For starter the price, when you add the realsense module the overall unit price will be more than the Phantom 4. That said the key thing here is that because the typhoon as a 360 degree gimbal it means that for obstacle avoidance it’s much more useful. If you are flying your Phantom backwards, it’s got no way of detecting an obstacle. If flying the Typhoon you can fly it forwards to the realsense module will detect obstacle, but you can turn the camera gimbal to face backwards allowing you to look backwards without needing to worry about crashing into something.

Exotic Travel Shooting with the Phantom 4

When you can call Hollywood movie director JJ Abrams a fan you know you’re doing something special in the photography world.  

Trey Ratcliff is a renowned photographer whose images show the beauty of exotic travel locations.  He runs the world’s number one travel photography blog and has even had his work displayed in the world’s biggest museum, the Smithsonian.  All this has been achieved despite what some may perceive as an obstacle- Ratcliff grew up blind in one eye.

This blindness, Ratcliff writes, gives him a unique perspective on the world as a story-teller. The Phantom 4, which Racliff reviewed, extends Ratcliff’s exceptional abilities to the sky.  

“Man, I love this machine” Ratcliff remarks as he flies the aircraft through another remarkable New Zealand landscape.

He has been flying DJI aerial products for 3 years starting with the Phantom 1 through to the Phantom 4 and is an avid and experienced pilot.

One particular feature Ratcliff was excited about is the obstacle avoidance system. “It’s got this obstacle avoidance system…to keep it from crashing into things!”

The Phantom 4’s ‘Obstacle Sensing System’ is always scanning for obstacles in its path. The system is composed of two special cameras at the front of the aircraft which help it avoid collisions by either hovering, going around, or going over the obstacle.

Ratcliff continues “it’s so fun and easy to fly. That’s the other big surprise that most people encounter when I hand over the controls to them…if you ever feel that you’re losing control just let go of the sticks and the Phantom 4 will hover there and will remain totally steady.”

The Phantom 4 uses multiple satellites for positioning, relying on both GPS and GLONASS. This allows the aircraft to connect to satellites more quickly and position itself accurately in the air. “Even in a crosswind…the Phantom 4 will stay steady” Ratcliff observes.

When affected by such wind, the Phantom 4’s integrated 3-axis gimbal removes unwanted vibration and movement. This means the camera can continue to capture butter-smooth and fluid footage.

A further feature of the Phantom 4 is that the intelligent battery lasts 25 minutes which Ratcliff advises is plenty of time to take the shots you need. Additionally, the battery has informative status indicator lights and auto-discharges to protect it if stored unused for 10 days.

Finally, Ratcliff offers a little bit of insight into his technique when he’s out with the Phantom 4.

As soon as he launches the aircraft, he begins taking video and views the live stream on his tablet. When he sees a shot that he wants to take, he stops recording, takes the photograph then resumes recording. He suggests that the Phantom 4 is so stable that he does not need to do any post-production stabilisation.

With drone technology, there are more possibilities than ever for anyone with an interest in photography.

As Ratcliff says, “forever, photographers have been tethered to where their camera and lens happens to be which is a completely arbitrary location, right beside the head. But now the camera can be literally anywhere, which is incredibly exciting!”

Launched earlier in 2016, the DJI Phantom 4 is recognised as the “best-in-class” RC quadcopter, contrasting with the year-old and problem plagued Yuneec Q500 4K.

DJI Phantom 4 reviews make it very clear that the DJI RC Quadcopter is the definitive winner in the DJI vs Yuneec contest.

A DJI Phantom 4 comparison against its competition becomes pretty straightforward when the Phantom’s collision avoidance feature is taken into account. Almost any Typhoon H review, evaluating the drone that Yuneec China produces, mentions that Yuneec drones are prone to connectivity problem. And one of the reasons for that is its reliance on Yuneec Q500 4k GPS tracking only.

On the contrary, Phantom 4 flight tracking is done through GPS as well as GLONASS. Launched in 1982, GLONASS is a Russian-led satellite network intended to work for weather positioning, velocity measuring and timing anywhere in the world or near-Earth space. Access to the US-led GPS system and to GLONASS makes the Phantom 4 a much better connected drone. All of this can be credited to DJI’s superior R&D capability.

DJI Phantom 4 signal loss incidents are extremely rare. And that’s at least partially due to the dual-support the drone gets. When used alone GLONASS doesn’t necessarily have a stronger coverage than GPS. But when both are used together, GPS+GLONASS certainly increase accuracy as well as coverage. And it is more useful in northern latitudes as Russia started GLONASS originally for Russia.

DJI Phantom 4 has a clear advantage over the Q500 4K or even any intel UAV Typhoon H. Accuracy is an advantage of using GLONASS with up-to 2 metre of accuracy. GPS+GLONASS allows the DJI drone to be pin pointed by a group of over 55 satellites all across the globe.

Consumer drones have exploded in popularity in recent years. These flying camera computers have the ability to detect faces, follow people around, fly on their own, land safely, and perform all sorts of cinematic tricks that used to require helicopters, cranes, steady hands, and lots of patience. And the prices are falling all the time: DJI’s Phantom 4 drone costs $1,100 and can avoid objects while tracking moving objects at over 25mph. So, it’ll follow you on a run in a straight line, but it tends to cut out or “lose” you if you turn — even if you go slowly. That’s just for the body-based follow mode. The face-based mode should follow you based on facial recognition, and I only got that one to work once.

Keep in mind that the auto-follow modes are one of the Passport’s biggest selling points, so this is kind of a big con. However, like I said, the drone gets software updates, so this issue could be resolved. The company even said they might add auto-follow for animals or objects (which isn’t available yet).

How to take off/land your drone during sailing

 

Professional as Inspire 2 or small as Mavic Pro, you can order most DJI drones to take off/land with one button. Well, you may not want to do that when you’re on yacht/ship.

So today we’re going to talk about a few know-hows for flying drones above ocean.

1.Take off

 

There is a lot to consider to take off on ships: weather, temperature, wind, signal, as well as whether the ship is stable or spatial enough to take off.

If you’ve got quite a ship with spatial, unobstructed deck, of course you can set flight by simply put it on deck and press take-off button on RC.sail1

However, if you’re on a speed boat/sailing boat, you’d better take off by holding your drone in hands in order to avoid obstacles like rope and mast.

If you’re going to take off the drone by holding its landing gear, I strongly suggest you to cooperate with your teammates. It’s difficult to keep balance on the ship/yacht.

Raise the drone above your head. Start the motor, when you feel the lift, let go of the drone.

2.Shoot footage

 

Make sure you have got good GPS signal before taking off, so that you can see Home Point on the map of DJI Go 4 app.

However, the map of the sea will be a vast blue, it’s hard to tell which direction the drone goes. Also, you may lost track of it easily with strong glows of sea.

 

Watch your monitor screen closely. Stay concentrated on critical flight parameters including battery level, speed, distance, altitude etc., and adjust parameters when necessary.

 

Do not go beyond your visual range. In this way, you can keep the drone safe while get what you want to shoot.

If you really want to let drone go beyond your sight distance, it must not exceeds the official transmission range. Otherwise the drone is highly likely to be gone. When you lose the video transmission, try to adjust your antennas to see if the drone can return.

3.Return and land

You need to refresh home points frequently as the ship moves. We strongly suggest:

 

 

  1. Do not go beyond visual range;

 

  1. Return and land your drone manually, and do remember to refresh home point frequently. So you can use RTH to make it hover near you, and then land it manually;

3. Land it manually.

Stay patient when it’s approaching the ship. With the ship waving, it’s quite difficult to success in one time. We recommend to get it with hands. If the weather is quite good, you can catch the landing gear very easily. When it gets windy, it’s quite difficult for us to finish it.

Do keep in mind: don’t put down your hands until the motors stop completely.

  1. Can I use the drone to follow a ship/yacht?

Usually a ship moves around 20km/h, ocean liners may sail at 40-70km/h. You can command the drone to circle around the ship, you will get quite some good photos. Don’t go too far, though.

Yes. But make it 5 meters above the water. In case waves smash down your drone or splash water into it. Remember

DJI Inspire series can endure wind at 10m/s. You can use app to check the wind speed or consult the crew. Please remember 1 nautical mile/h=1.852km/h.

Before taking off, you need to set the aircraft’s action if lost control. Set it as ‘return to home’. If you lost control over it, wait patiently at the last home point, there is a chance it would come back.

DJI Tech-Flight Controller

In recent years, multi-rotor aircraft has become the main form for drones. Compared to the helicopters, multi-rotor aircrafts feature simpler structure and cheaper cost; compared to fixed-wing aircrafts, multi-rotor aircrafts are easier to operate and ready to hover with less requirements for the flying fields. This helps explain why a wide range of drones from aircraft toys to industrial drones are made into multi-rotor ones.

All multi-rotor aircrafts are similar in mechanical structure where you only have to mount the propellers on the motor, yet their flight performance varies due to different flight controllers. The flight controller can ensure precise operation and stable hovering by controlling the motor speed, making it possible for beginners to quickly get the hang of drones through simple learning. So to speak, a drone’s performance is mainly decided by its flight controller.

Flight Status

Before attitude control and navigation, the flight controller needs to check the aircraft’s flight status first, which includes 15 parameters such as the three-dimensional location, three-dimensional speed, three-dimensional acceleration, three-axis angle and angular speed. As the multi-rotor aircraft itself is not stable, the motor power has to be constantly tuned for stable hovering and flying. Therefore, even for the simplest action of releasing the joysticks to keep the aircraft hovering, the flight controller has to consistently monitor the 15 parameters and conduct a series of “cascade control” in order to achieve stable hovering.

The first technical difficulty for the flight controller is to precisely perceive the flight status. At present, drones normally use GPS, IMU, barometer and magnetic compass to measure these parameters. The GPS can track the location, sometimes even the altitude and speed; IMU can measure the drone’s three-axis acceleration and three-axis angular speed, and obtain the speed and location through calculation; the barometer is used to measure the height above sea level; the magnetic compass is used for orientation and navigation.

Due to limited sensor design level at present, the data collected by these sensors will generate certain errors and might be disturbed by the environment, consequently reducing the precision of flight status. In order to guarantee normal flight performance, the data collected from different sensors should be fully integrated to conclude 15 high-credibility parameters. We call it as integrated navigation technology which makes the most of the advantages of the GPS, IMU, barometer and magnetic compass and integrates various sensors’ values through electronic signal processing technologies to acquire more precise status measurement.

Integrated Navigation

In order to improve the drones’ sensory ability and flight performance, apart from adopting basic sensors mentioned above, DJI also equips its popular drones with advanced vision sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and redundant IMU and Compass navigation system. For example, DJI Inspire 2, Phantom 4 series and Mavic Pro are equipped with these sensors and intelligent navigation solutions. The dual vision sensors can calculate the object’s three-dimensional location based on continuous images. In addition to obstacle avoidance, it also supports positioning and speed measurement. The ultrasonic sensor can help monitor the flight height. Thanks to the redundant IMU and Compass, when the system detects an inconsistency in one sensor, it switches to the other one, keeping your flight steady and reliable.

The intelligent navigation system in addition to these sensors can increase the drone’s accessibility to more environments and improve its reliability. The drones using traditional navigation system cannot fly stably in environment without GPS while the intelligent navigation system can improve the precision of speed and location measurement through visual sensing system with good GPS signal. With weak GPS signal, the visual sensing system can replace the GPS to provide positioning and speed measurement so that the drone can fly stably indoors and outdoors.

These sensors have significantly improved the intelligent navigation system’s data volume and complexity. Regarding the vision and sensors, DJI conducts several system reconfigurations for the navigation and flight control algorithm and adds new software modules and architectures, comprehensively improving the flight performance and reliability.

Advanced control algorithm empowers DJI’s flight controller with remarkable control quality, featuring high control precision at normal flight state and ensuring stable and high-speed flight. The Inspire 2 can reach a maximum horizontal speed of 94 km/h, the Phantom 4 can reach 72km/h and the compact Mavic can reach 65 km/h, while other similar drones can only reach 30 to 50 km/h. High-speed flight requires high control quality and response speed in addition to powerful propulsion system. Apart from high-speed flight, DJI drones also support high-precision hovering and idling control, making for flexible flying and image composition.

While designing the flight controller, DJI not only pays attention to the control precision at normal flight state, such as hovering position and attitude control precision, but also particularly enhances the control quality for unusual flight status. In case of broken propellers, sudden clash, added weight or external force interference, DJI drones feature strong recovery ability and robustness and can survive various extreme situations, keeping your flight safe and reliable.

Fault Diagnosis

Before or during the flight, any tiny fault may result in flight accidents. If the flight controller can monitor and diagnose faults in real time, the probability of accidents can be dramatically lowered. Could the Yuneec Typhoon drone surpass DJI?Now I will make a comparison here.

Yuneec Typhoon drone remains essentially true to itself, when it comes to the initial impression.

Automatic obstacle avoidance technology comes out from two top companies’ PK which has attracted us a lot. DJI obstacle avoidance uses its own Guidance technology which applied earliest into DJI wraf/weft M100 in 2015. DJI has once cooperated with Intel in this project. Until now, its automatic obstacle avoidance is really ripe.

Yuneec Typhoon drone develops obstacle avoidance based on camera of Real Sense of Intel. Intel RealSense module uses Intel sensing technology, which can integrate two infrared camera, an infrared emitter and a standard RGB camera information to GPU so as to build the 3D information. In enough sunlight, RealSense modules can recognize obstances in 10 meters and tell its shape and place. At night, RealSense module can feel the obstacle in about 5 meters with the help of active infrared transmitters. Intel Realsense module released early at CES in Jan, 2016. Yuneec Typhoon drone H has two versions, advanced version and professional version. Only two ultraviolet modules are on the front of Yuneec Typhoon drone H advanced version, which cause doubt in the effect of obstacle avoidance.

In addition, from the theory of obstacle avoidance, the active obstacle avoidance of DJI Phantom 4 uses visual perception system which can tell the obstacle distance in the front from 0.7m to 15 meters and brake or upward flying around obstacles. But Yuneec Typhoon drone H can use ultraviolet to avoid obstacle. It can avoid in 5 meters. But it is easy to disturb by the environment and ultraviolet perception is not better than vision.This kind of shortage can easily lead to the unstable avoidance function to occur brakes or failure.

We also care much about battery life.They are both 4s battery with similar capacity. However, the rotors design and heavier weight of Yuneec Typhoon drone H makes its battery life less than 4 minutes to 6 minutes than DJI Phantom 4. In aerial, the gap of 6 minutes sense is definitely different. So it not only affect the same flying time about taking off and landing, change of the electric frequency but also affects the aerial efficency directly. In additon, from charging time, Yuneec Typhoon drone H needs 2 hours to charge, but Phantom 4 only takes 1 hour.

Yuneec Typhoon drone H still continues Q500 4K configuration with built in 7inch remote control which can not reduce the comprehensive cost, but also reduce compatibility problem of mobile phone or tablet. From this point of view, Yuneec Typhoon drone H dominates. But this kind of design also brings inconvenience. For example, it can update the map real time, and not easy to share the photos in social media.
